Interfaith Community Service Week:
|
|
Join this large scale effort bringing together a multi-faith
coalition for the benefit of the needy in the greater Allentown area.
For 2010 we have expanded the event from a single day to an entire week! |
|
| When: |
Saturday April 24, 2010 - We kick-off the event with a
Progressive Prayer Walk, visiting several houses of
worship as we spiritually prepare for the week ahead. Click Here for details!
Sunday April 25 - Sunday May 2, 2010 - Congregations and other faith-based groups sponsor projects to help service agencies in the greater Allentown area. Volunteers of all faiths are welcome to participate in any of the activities. We encourage volunteers to sign-up for a project sponsored by a group not your own! Let this be a week of sharing, caring, and learning about each other. Thursday, April 29, 7-9 pm - Pause in the midst of the week of service to reflect and engage in dialogue on service from the standpoint of your religious background and others'. Local community leaders and community service veterans will discuss the religious backgrounds to service and the impact it has on their own lives, and trained discussion facilitators will help us to engage these issues with neighbors of various faiths who are taking part in the Interfaith Week of Community Service. Enjoy the hospitality of the Muslim Association of the Lehigh Valley, 1988 Schadt Avenue, Whitehall, and the array of international desserts that will accompany the program. Presented by Interfaith in Action of the Lehigh County Conference of Churches in cooperation with the Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding of Muhlenberg College. For more info contact: events@lehighchurches.org. Download the flyer for this event. Sunday May 2, 2010 - At 4:45 pm there will be a Pot Luck dinner for volunteers and their families at Congregation Keneseth Israel, Allentown. |

| Why: | The Interfaith Coalition for Community Service of Allentown, made up of clergy and lay volunteers with the support of the Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley, is dedicated to help change the landscape of interfaith relations and understanding in the Greater Allentown area - while performing acts of community service. | |||
| Who: | Anyone in the community can participate, regardless of affiliation or non-affiliation. Each faith based group involved will organize and execute a volunteer project to support an Allentown based agency or community need. Each project will be open to all coalition members from all faiths to make this a true interfaith experience. | |||
| Where: | Community service activities will be held throughout the greater Allentown area at agency sites or at the location of the sponsoring group, depending on the nature of the project. All gather at Congregation Keneseth Israel for a Pot Luck dinner at 4:45 pm to wrap-up our week on Sunday, May 2. | |||
| What: | Each congregation will appoint a Team Leader who is the point of contact with volunteers as well as coalition organizers. They plan their project logistics. | |||
| What Else: |
The Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley will be the clearing house for the various projects ideas and will provide on-line registration so that any volunteer can sign up for a volunteer activity sponsored by any of the congregations. Last year, over 400 volunteers from over 25 faith based congregations participated. The event was topped off at the pot luck dinner kicked off by Mayor Pawlowski.
